Selected for the 2026 Burning Man

The Bonfire Pavilion occupies a 20’x20’ footprint and stands 17’ tall, organized on a 5’x5’ plan grid. The primary structure consists of vertical 4"x4" timber studs of varying heights, creating an organic, rising silhouette that mimics the motion of a flame. A complex network of 2"x4" diagonal elements is rationalized into four specific angles. To maximize build efficiency, the majority of these diagonal elements are cut to a uniform length, while a select number of members feature variable lengths to achieve the overall organic, textured look. By Day: The structure appears as a dense, sculptural timber lattice. Integrated benches link the vertical members, providing structural stability and a shaded sanctuary for rest. Inside the pavilion is a small gathering space where participants can lie down and look at the sky through the rising wood members. By Night: The installation is illuminated by programmed LED light tubes. These pulse with red and orange light, creating a "flickering" bonfire effect visible from across the playa.
